Ok, boys and girls; i've just setup Google Talk, Google's newest app and the newest IM client available.
really impressed with the totally painless install, absolutely elegant interface, seamless integration with gmail and i haven't even talked with anyone yet!
looks and feels like a desktop app, looks like the WebOS or maybe GoogleOS that's the current buzzword isn't all hype.
wanna try to VOIP services, now that i've broken out my previously retired microphone.

in light of all the charity-related news in recent weeks, both NKF (NationKenaFuck) and Live8, here's an interesting article on how to better distribute your donation money.

On its Web site, GlobalGiving provided brief descriptions of 112 development projects, asking site visitors to rank them on a scale of 1 to 10. About 50,000 individuals generated 200,000 evaluations. Simultaneously, a much smaller group of several hundred aid experts was asked to perform the same task. Of the 12 projects chosen by the experts, nine were also chosen by popular vote.

the article posits the Internet as the best way of distributing this decision-making process, that "the decentralised data networks will flatten the present system of status entirely, making us all equal, and wiser for it".

along with the tenuous theory of crowds always making the right decision, but he's also forgetting to address the digital divide. developing nations aren't going to have much say in this process if they don't even have a phone line much less broadband connection.
so now one of the greatest barriers standing between equality among all men is the unavailability of hardware, and dickwads in the US are doing this?!
not a great segue, i know, but i just had to mention it.
needless waste of resources like this just really gets on my tits.

i've only seen ghost dog, which is one of the weirdest as well as most heartfelt movies i've ever seen.
just a quickie: black hitman in US operates by the samurai's bushido code, speaks in translated japanese sonnets and has an ice cream man for a best friend.
bill murray was recently in jarmusch's previous film, coffee and cigarettes, which i've yet to catch.

Even at my most exhausted, i still avoid taking afternoon naps, because almost surely, i will awaken, start to push off my bed before realising my hands are not pushing down, i'm not really sitting up and most horrifyingly, my lungs are not moving.
my mind is up and awake, my synapses are firing full blast, but my body's not responding and my bed's become my prison.
panic sets in almost immediately, and i'll be concentrating all my energies into moving something, anything, from my little toe to opening my eyelids.
at some point, probably just seconds (that feel like minutes), i'll sit up gasping and trembling but be none the worse for wear.
i guess i'm lucky, because that is the extent of horror from my episodes, while many people suffer greater terror, as you can find out from this article.
nice to finally have a name to what i've been experiencing.

bit of a movie-related post here, as the title suggests:

1. just watched batman begins.
thought there was an overemphasis on the ninja smoke bombs and sneaking about (although batman as a ninja makes perfect sense), and some cock plotholes about the microwave emitter. why didn't the water in people's bodies vapourise then? i must've missed a pseudo-explanatory line somewhere.
the casting was note-perfect though, especially the golden greats; micheal caine and morgan freeman. christian bale's great as a young bruce wayne, but can't match michael keaton's neurotic near-sociopath, as batman really should be.
anyways, with token review out of the way, not to give away the ending but more proof of chris nolan's impeccable casting choices can be found in the sequel.

2. ignore the ravings of a clearly insane tom cruise (free katie!!) and check out a comic adaptation (in progress) of the original war of the worlds.

3. and lastly, KING BLOODY KONG TRAILER.

people keep thinking that copyright is to protect the interests of the copyright holder, but they forget the holder and creator are not always the same person. copyright as it stands today deprives the public domain for what is tantamount to eternity. limited copyright is necessary for creators to reap well-deserved rewards but an unlimited copyright will leaves us with a culturally bereft society in the long run. 90% of all the great music u hear today will be gone for good in a few decades if noone has the legal means to sample them in music or even use them in films and tv.
lawrence lessig has written free culture, which is a excellent and well-argued treatise on the matter.

Of all the revelations that have rocked the Israeli army over the past week, perhaps none disturbed the public so much as the video footage of soldiers forcing a Palestinian man to play his violin.
it seems blood and violence no longer shocks the news-gorged public; it takes something as hokey and hollywood cliche as a guy playing a violin to provoke outrage.
its humiliating and cruel, sure, but its a shitty state of affairs in the world today if outright murder is just too plain vanilla for people to give a damn.

i dont usually get special edition albums if i've already got the original but i'm most probably making an exception in this case.
i remember attempting PCP and Yes in that shitty Yishun studio with Weiyuan and Willy all those years ago when the power suddenly quit on us.
thought that was fucking rockstar at the time cos i knew The Holy Bible had also been recorded in a shitty studio in the redlight district of Cardiff.
This album stands out as a milestone for me as the first angry music i really related to that didnt have anything to do with not being able to get girls (re: the Smiths).
though the newest album is pretty shite. stay tuned for my review on Aging Youth.

They are/were manufactured by a company called Banpresto (http://www.banpresto.co.jp/) and released in 2002. The guitars have an internal amp and speaker. Pulling the trigger plays back one of 3 Gundam sound effects. Couldn't find any info on whether the magazine does anything. 1 metre length, 3.5 kg weight, battery powered.

is it just me or did Micro$oft just screw over their non-IE hotmail users over the weekend? they upped the storage capacity for paying customers to 2GB but all of a sudden, i cant access my hotmail account thru my Opera browser anymore? i think they slipped a stinkbomb in with the early Xmas present cos its a bit of a coincidence for both things to happen simultaneously, innit? or maybe its just me... any fellow Opera users with the same problem?
maybe its time to switch again; this sounds promising, plus Opera aint compatible with Gmail, which is a total bitch.
